I believe that effective social work cannot be separated from the person behind the practice. My framework is an integration of clinical rigor and mindfulness.

At its heart, my work is about the ‘use of self.’ I understand that my values, my history, and my own mindfulness practice shape how I hear your story and how I respond to it. By blending trauma-informed theories with the art of deep, still listening, I strive to create spaces where safety is felt, and empowerment becomes possible.

1. The Foundation: Mindful Presence & Self-Awareness

I believe that effective social work begins with the “use of self.” My practice is anchored in Mindfulness (Anapanasati), not just as a technique, but as a way of being.

  • Presence: Cultivating a grounded, non-judgmental space that supports co-regulation and safety.
  • Self-Care as Ethics: Utilizing somatic practices and reflective supervision to ensure long-term sustainability and prevent vicarious trauma.

2. Core Values & Ethical Orientation

My work is guided by the AASW Code of Ethics and a commitment to radical acceptance and cultural humility.

  • Empowerment: Shifting from “doing for” to “doing with,” strengthening client agency and voice.
  • Compassion & Curiosity: Approaching every story with a “not-knowing” mindset to honor the client’s expertise in their own life.
  • Social Justice: Recognizing the systemic origins of personal challenges, including colonisation, racism, and socioeconomic disadvantage.

3. Theoretical Lenses (How I See the World)

I utilize an integrative theoretical foundation to navigate complex human experiences:

  • Systems Theory: Understanding individuals within their interconnected family, social, and economic environments.
  • Trauma-Informed Practice: Prioritizing emotional safety and working within the “window of tolerance.”
  • Strengths-Based & Solution-Focused: Identifying existing capacities to foster hope and meaningful change.
  • Person-Centred Approach: Grounding every interaction in unconditional positive regard and empathy.

4. Integrative Methods (How I Intervene)

I adapt my methods to meet the unique needs of each individual or community:

  • Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBSR/MiCBT): Supporting emotional regulation and resilience.
  • Narrative Therapy: Externalising problems and exploring alternative stories of strength.
  • Dadirri & Yarning: Incorporating deep listening and storytelling to ensure culturally safe and inclusive practice.
  • Future Directions: Developing competence in EMDR-informed principles and motivational interviewing.

This summary is a reflection of a deeper inquiry into my professional identity. For a comprehensive exploration of the theories, ethics, and lived experiences that shape my work, you can read the full essay below.
